Perfume Shop recruiting to fill 1,000 festive jobs in retail sales and customer service

SANTA doesn’t just hand out presents each year — he brings tens of thousands of new jobs too.

On top of the 50,000-plus seasonal roles highlighted on the rest of this page, another 1,000 roles are truly heaven-scent.

The Perfume Shop is the UK’s largest specialist fragrance retailer and wants to recruit as it gets ready for its busiest time of the year. The vacancies are mainly for Christmas sales assistants, with other opportunities in the customer service and warehouse teams.

The positions are temporary but recruits will have an opportunity to secure a permanent contract, with one in five festive temps staying on permanently last year.

Emily May Hewitt, 23, of Wigan, joined as a temporary sales assistant in October 2012 and is now an acting store manager for Perfume Shop’s Intu Trafford Centre store. She says: “My first few weeks  were a whirlwind. I hadn’t realised how much knowledge I’d need to soak up. It wasn’t just about selling perfume, it was about recommending the right perfume based on the customer’s likes and dislikes.

“Every day is different. I love the customer interaction. Building that relationship and seeing them sharing their fragrance stories makes my job even more enjoyable.”

The hotel giant is looking to fill 875 positions in the countdown to the festive season.

Permanent jobs are available in Travelodge hotels across the country. The roles on offer include  openings for receptionists, room cleaners and bar staff.

There are also 55 vacancies for hotel managers and assistant managers.

At the Travelodge head office in Oxfordshire, there are 21 positions are available in IT, finance and HR.

In addition, the company wants  to hire four maintenance engineers to support its ongoing regional maintenance programme.

People project manager Sophie White, 25, from Thame, Oxon, has worked for Travelodge for the past seven years.

Sophie, above, says: “The company is totally committed to developing its people.”

DON’T just send Christmas cards, help to deliver them.

Royal Mail is looking to recruit 20,000 temporary workers.

Around 16,000 of those jobs will be in  mail,  distribution and data centres across England,   including 1,000 roles at the new parcel-sorting supercentre at Atherstone, Warks.

There are around 1,000 posts in Scotland, 300 in Wales and 500 in Northern Ireland. Royal Mail’s Parcelforce arm is recruiting 900 parcel sorters and 1,200 drivers.

Chief operations officer Sue Whalley said: “We plan all year round to help ensure we deliver the best possible service for  consumers and businesses at Christmas.”

The store needs 9,800 customer advisers and stock assistants at more than 800 of its outlets, along with 1,000  drivers.

Recruits will be offered a minimum of ten hours per week (six hours a week for weekend staff) with the potential for some of the roles to become permanent.

Leeds customer service manager Olivia Goddard, 22,  joined in October 2011 as a customer adviser.

She said: “Christmas temps are people from all walks of life.

“There are seasonal workers like I was, working mums and dads and people who are retired but looking for something part-time that they will enjoy.

“You get to work with such a variety of people, which makes you grow as a person.”
