Looking for extra Christmas cash? Here are the temp jobs you can apply for – and how much they pay
THOUSANDS of seasonal jobs are up for grabs as retailers prepare for the busy holiday season.
It can be really useful to make extra cash as the expensive run up to Christmas begins.
Fortunately, it is also a great time to find temporary work as retail companies across the country need some extra help to meet high demand from shoppers.
In September, Argos already announced it is to recruit more than 10,000 seasonal staff to work in its stores.
Jobs on offer include customer advisers, stock assistants and drivers, with the potential for some roles to become permanent at the end of the season.
But the retailer is not alone in hiring new stuff.
What pay am I entitled to?
TAKING on a temporary job can be a great solution to make some extra cash. But how much pay are you entitled to ?
- You must be paid at least the national minimum wage for your age group
- People aged 25 and over are entitled to at least £7.50 an hour.
- People aged 21 to 24 should get no less than £7.05.
- People aged 18 to 20 should get at least £5.60.
- People 16 and 17 are entitled to £4.05 per hour.
- Note that many large companies offer better rates of pay than minimum wage and extra benefits

Marks & Spencer
The retailer's Christmas jobs are available from September through New Year.
Available roles include beauty and cafe customers assistants, visual stylists, customers services advisers and warehouse operatives - to name just a few.
Both full and part-time temporary jobs with a variety of different shift patterns are available, meaning there’s bound to be something to suit you.
M&S claims salaries are "competitive" and you'll also get a 20 per cent discount on all in-store and online purchases.
There’s no limit on the amount of product you can buy with the discount – and the company can extend it to a partner or family member who lives permanently with you.

John Lewis
The retailer behind the most popular Christmas advert is looking for selling assistants and replenishment or stock management partners.
Be prepared to work hard as the retailer hints that successful candidates should be able to pick up things quickly and be flexible with their working hours.
If successful you will be offered a contract which may include weekends, early mornings and late nights working.
But there may be the opportunity to increase your hours, particularly in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Boots
Boots is looking to hire more than 2,000 temporary people over the busy Christmas period.
Most roles are starting in early December, and the retailer is searching for Christmas customer and operations assistants across the UK.

Harrods
The posh department store has a variety of roles on offer.
It includes sales assistants, loyalty advisers and Christmas grotto hosts to support Santa in the run up to the big day.
Many jobs are based on a 37.5 hour contract.
You'll also get a 33 per cent discount across the store and some benefits but you must be prepared to work under pressure.
According to Harrods, working over the holiday season can be "challenging" and the retailer is specifically looking for "fully flexible temps".

Royal Mail
If you want to deliver Father Christmas' letters in December you can apply for a job with the Royal Mail.
Joining as a Christmas temporary worker at one of the company's mail centres, you’ll be helping to sort items for 29 million addresses across the UK.
A mix of full and part-time indoor positions will be available on early, late and night shifts from early November through until December at different locations across the country.

Toy Shop
Enthusiasm and commitment is apparently essential for you to become a seasonal toy expert at Toy Shop.
Full training will be given and you will also pay you be paid fortnightly directly into your UK bank account.
You'll also get a 20 per cent staff discount across the store and a night shift premium if you are working on the late shifts.

The retailer will have job openings from October 9 until December 30. Night shift crew will be on a 37.5 hour contract.
Standard crew contracts are 20 hours and 10 hours a week with more hours in the build up to December.

Primark is now hiring for Christmas temporary retail assistants.
If interested, you must be willing to work every day from Monday to Sunday, on a five over seven day weekly rota.
This means positions will not suit those who are just looking for weekend or evening work.
You must be available to start working from mid September to October.
