SendMyBag claims that it can save holidaymakers HUNDREDS of pounds per year on baggage costs – but there are catches

SQUEEZING a week’s worth of clothes into one hand luggage sized suitcase just to avoid the fees of putting it in hold could soon become a thing of the past.

Door-to-door luggage delivery service, SendMyBag, costs less than half than what it would cost you to put your luggage in the airplane hold - but there’s a catch.

If you want your luggage to arrive on holiday the same day as you do, you’ll have to send it off at least two days before you travel.

What started out as a service for students moving houses back in 2010, now boasts that it’s used by around 100,000 people this year alone.

It's used mainly by people moving abroad, or companies who need to transport lots of equipment like music bands.

It's even got Hollywood actors on it's client list, but now the company reckons it's an viable option for holidaymakers too.

"Last year, airlines collected more than a billion dollars in baggage fees," explains Adam Ewart, founder of SendMyBag.

"They'll charge you for anything, from putting it in the hold to charging huge excess fees for overweight bags.

"We're used by people who like the convenience of the door-to-door service, or people who just want to save money getting their luggage abroad."

SendMyBag picks up your luggage from your door and delivers it right to your destination, and you can check its progress through the app.

Typically, SendMyBag is cheaper than putting your bag in the hold of a Ryanair or EasyJet flight, and it means you can skip the boring baggage claim at the other end.

If you’re getting a return flight from London to Belfast, it will cost you £140 to put one bag weighing 24kg in the hold on Ryanair, or £70 on EasyJet.

With SendMyBag, you could send a bag weighing up to 30kg for just £32. That’s a saving of at least £108.

Under the same weight restrictions, to put your bag in the hold on a return flight to Alicante from London will set you back £165 on Ryanair and £87 on EasyJet.

It will cost you just £64 with SendMyBag.

And if you’ve got a connecting flight, you won’t be held up by delays at baggage claim between legs of the journey, because your bag will be taking a direct route.

The complimentary insurance covers your luggage up to £125 in case your bags are lost or damaged en route.

According to moneyadviceservice.org.uk, a good travel insurance package should cover up to £1,500 for your luggage, so really the cover offered from SendMyBag is a low deal.

You can upgrade your policy with SendMyBag to cover luggage up to £250 for £4, £500 for £8, £1,000 for £16 or £24 will cover luggage worth up to £1,500.

But you may want to look elsewhere to see if you can get a better deal.

It's worth remembering that any extra fees you pay to upgrade your insurance policy will eat into any savings you made through the service in the first place.

If you're super organised and don't mind parting with your hair straighteners a few days before you go on holiday, then this might be an option for you to save a few quid.

But remember, if you use the service to get your bags home, you’ll need to be prepared for it to arrive back a few days after you too.

We reported that EasyJet passengers can pay £4 to put their luggage in hold, but that doesn’t address the problem of checking it in in the first place.
