The average gym membership costs £40 a month and some have hefty fees to join too.

Sun Savers is here to help you trim your tum as well as your costs.

Here are seven great tips to shape up.

  1.  Grab a pal for a power-walk or run. It costs nothing and you will motivate each other to go harder. Just 15 minutes a day will make a difference to your general fitness but try to build up to 30 minutes.
  2. Don’t splash out on pricey weights. Use bottles of water or even tins of beans until you need heavier weights.
  3. Got young kids and no spare time? Fitness DVDs can be a cost-effective way to exercise and you can do it at home while your little ones nap. You can borrow DVDs from your local library.
  4. Use your stairs at home as a gym. Go up and down several times a day more than you need to. Build up to taking the stairs instead of a lift or escalator when you go out.
  5. Can’t afford a personal trainer? Try the free NHS fitness podcasts available at nhs.uk/livewell.
  6. Over 60? Some council pools offer free swimming or other fitness activities. Contact your local leisure centre.
  7. Keen to try yoga? Find reputable demo videos on YouTube.
  • PRICES correct at time of press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
