These are six ways to make sure product sizes shrinking doesn’t inflate your spending — plus use your code to win £100k
HAVE you got that shrinking feeling?
More than 2,500 popular products have got smaller in recent years while their prices stayed the same, the Office for National Statistics says.
Chocolate bars, soft drinks, packs of tissues, disposable nappies and toilet rolls are among the products affected.
And last week The Sun told how sweets brands including Haribo and Maoam have also dwindled. Haribo Tangfastics, Starmix and Giant Strawbs bags now weigh 190g, down from 215g — with the same £1 price tag in most of the major supermarkets.
Maoam Joystixx packets dropped from 160g to 140g but rose in price from 85p to £1 in Asda, analysts at Brand View found.
Here we team up with topcashback.co.uk to show you how to make sure shrinkage doesn’t inflate your spending.
- Most of the products affected are big-name branded items, so try switching to supermarket own-label versions to get more for your money. These products are also less likely to be reduced in size in the future.
- If you are still keen to buy branded products, swap between labels.Check pack weights or sizes against other brands in store. You could get a far better deal by switching to a rival brand.
- Always look for the unit price. Whether you are shopping online or in-store, shops should display a cost per item or per gram. It is the most effective way to find the lowest-priced item.
- Keep a note of the current size and price of your favourite products so you can easily see when either changes.
- Make your money go much further by using in-store apps like CheckoutSmart and TopCashback. They will tell you what offers they have. When you buy certain items and upload a picture of your receipt, you could get money off, two-for-one deals or cashback.
- Layer up your savings by using a cashback credit card, which will bring down the cost of your overall shop. But pay the balance in full each month so you don’t get hit with interest charges.
Five that shrank
- Mondelez cut Toblerone 400g and 170g bars to 360g and 150g
- McVitie’s dark chocolate Digestives shrank from 332g to 300g but price went up 10p
- Andrex cut 21 sheets from Classic loo rolls
- Stella Artois reduced the size of cider bottles from 568ml (a pint) to 500ml
- Mars shrank Maltesers sharing packs from 103g to 93g. It was the second reduction in a year. Just last October, bags weighed 121g
