Morrisons cuts THOUSANDS of prices and offers discounts to customers who buy British food

Customers will get discounts and rewards on over 1,400 homegrown products in support of British Food Fortnight

MORRISONS is to cut thousands of prices and offer extra rewards to customers who buy British food.

Starting from today and for the next two weeks the supermarket is offering discounts and extra loyalty points on over 1,400 homegrown products in support of  British Food Fortnight.

For example, a leg of British lamb is now selling for £7 instead of £10.55 - a discount of more than 30 per cent on its previous price.

While British cod prices have been reduced from £13.97 per kilo to £12.

Shoppers using the Morrisons loyalty scheme can also earn extra points on products that are made in Britain like British Somerset Brie and Cornish Camembert.

Each of the items will have 100 loyalty card points attached to them which customers can pick up at the checkout.

This is a generous increase considering members of the grocer's "More" loyalty scheme usually earn just 5 points for every £1 they spend in stores and online.

Shoppers need to earn 5,000 points before they are awarded a £5 voucher.

You can also get the extra points if you buy sugar made from sugar beet grown in East Anglia or beansprouts grown in Worsley, near Manchester.

Other items included in the promotion are Greek Style Yoghurt produced in Cumbria rather than Crete and Focaccia baked by Morrisons.

Items included in the promotions will be marked with Union Jack flags, both in store on packaging and online.

British products will be sold together so they are more identifiable in the fruit and veg section and fishmonger

Morrisons’ decision comes as part of its wider programme to sell more food that is both British and local.

The supermarket committed to sell British-only fresh meat this summer.

It came as new data recently revealed meat imports to the UK doubled over the last two decades, according to customer data.

In February, Morrisons found that only 52 per cent of the food eaten in Britain comes from local sources.

Its rival Co-op was the first supermarket to switch all of its fresh meat to British-only at the beginning of the year.
