Slough tops list of best places to work in the UK – where does your home town rank?

SLOUGH, the commuter town most famous for providing the backdrop for TV comedy The Office, has been crowned the best place to work in the UK.

Recruitment and job website Glassdoor ranked the best towns and cities in the country based on ease of finding a job, employees' job satisfaction and how affordable it is to live in.

Slough, which was the subject of a 1937 John Betjeman’s poem beginning with: "Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! / It isn't fit for humans now", secured an overall score of 4.2 out of five according to employees who work there.

Glassdoor’s research also showed Slough’s offered a good quality of life with median salaries of £35,000 per year, almost 26,400 job openings available at last count and the average house costing £390,000.

Manchester came second with a rating of four out of five thanks to its median base salary of £23,998 and its fairly low average house price of £177,263.

Also, making up the top five in the ranking were Cambridge, Swindon, and Stoke-on-Trent.

London did not even make the shortlist this year.

“With large multinational businesses establishing themselves in Slough, along with high average salaries and close proximity to major transport hubs such as Heathrow Airport, the Berkshire town has now emerged as a prime spot to live and work,” said Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor.

According to Mr Chamberlain people in London are generally satisfied but it has proven to be an expensive place to live and an “ultra-competitive city” in which to find a job.
