Aldi and Lidl now take £1 of every £8 spent by Brits in supermarkets
The figures mark a dramatic increase from a decade ago, when the two German stores made just £1 per £25 spent in British supermarkets
NEARLY £1 in £8 of supermarket spending is at Aldi and Lidl.
A decade ago the two budget stores took just £1 in every £25.
And 63 per cent of people have shopped there in the past three months, up from 58.5 per cent last year.
Lidl is the fastest growing supermarket, with sales up 19.2 per cent in three months.
Its market share is now a record 5.3 per cent, researchers Kantar Worldpanel said.
Meanwhile, Aldi sales leapt 15.6 per cent, 6.9 per cent of the market.
But 98 per cent have shopped in a Big Four store over the same period.
Sales at Tesco are up 2.7 per cent but market share is down slightly to 27.8 per cent.
Kantar said: “Its recovery’s becoming entrenched.”

Overall grocery inflation is 3.2 per cent.
