A spokesman said: “Watching your beauty budget doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to a new hair cut or pampering facemask, you just have to learn to be savvy about it.”

Here are the top tips:

  1. Visit beauty colleges: Most local beauty colleges will offer everything from a cut and blow-dry to manicures to massages for under £5. Not only are you supporting students, you’ll get a treatment at around 75 per cent off the normal price, and sometimes even free.
  2. Apply for samples: Lots of brands give free samples of products for testing or market research.
Look out for offers on social media and sign up online to your favourite labels’ mailing lists.
  3. Get free make-up consultations from beauty bars: Most big brands offer free consultations at their department-store counters, where an artist will apply your make-up for you. It’s a great way to look your best for a big night out without forking out.
  4. Host a pampering party: Get your friends together to all swap and share your favourite tips, products and expertise.
  5. DIY hair and facemasks: Don’t fork out for expensive hair and face masks. Instead make your own with ingredients available at your local supermarket.
A great one to try is a banana hair mask. Simply blend bananas and honey together, and apply to your hair.
The result? Well-nourished and smooth hair which smells delicious. Search for more on YouTube.
  6. Recycle old products for new replacements: Some cosmetics firms offer a discount on new products if you recycle your old containers. Check your fave firm’s policy as it can be a good saving.
  7. Dye your hair at home: Brits typically fork out £50 a time to have hair coloured or highlighted, but you can use a home kit from just £5. Ask a friend who has done it before to help.
  8. Try own brand: Switching to own-brand skincare like toner and cleansers can save a small fortune.
Some, like Aldi’s Laucra, have even won top awards.
