The best bread for toasting is revealed in a blind taste test… and it’s a 50p loaf that takes top spot

The winner of blind taste test may surprise you ...and so will the loser

THE best bread for that morning slice of toast has been revealed after food experts carried out a blind taste test.

The Good Housekeeping Institute judges examined varieties commonly bought by Brits.

And the winner is remarkably an own-brand label costing just 50p.

But even more surprisingly a well-known brand came last and costs twice as much.

So, top of the toast was Tesco's own-brand 50p White Toastie Thick loaf.

It was scored a whopping 86/100 by the judges.

They concluded: “Crisp, fluffy and thick, the perfect combination for a delicious slice of toast.

“Tesco's Toastie ticked all the boxes.

“Our taste panel raved about its crunchy bite.”

And a close second was Aldi's 45p Soft White Toastie loaf, which scored 85/100.

This was followed by Co-op's 75p White Toastie loaf, which received 83/100.

Of Aldi's loaf, the judges said: “The bread turns a lovely brown when toasted.”

Commenting on the Co-op's bread, they added: “A delicious bread with a satisfyingly crunchy crust.”

But bottom of the league was Warburtons.

The brand's £1 Medium Sliced White loaf received just 60/100 - which is 13 points less than the next worst bread.

Commenting on the loaf, judges said it had a “beautiful crispness” but that the panel “felt that the flavour was quite mild and the texture wasn't soft and fluffy enough”.

Warburtons were contacted by Sun Online for a comment.

Second from bottom of the breads taste tested was Lidl’s 45p loaf, followed by Asda's 50p loaf and Morrisons 50p Medium White loaf.

A Tesco spokesman said: “It's a real honour to be told that our Toastie Thick loaf is the best thing since sliced bread.”

Laurel Gilbert, product developer for bread at Co-op, said: “We go to great lengths to make sure our own-brand ranges are the best on the market, and it's exciting to see that the work is being recognised.

“We strive to create delicious, everyday products for our customers and we're proud that our White Toastie bread has done so well in this taste test.”
