But waiting until the launch date to sell your old handset may cost you dear.

Research shows sellers who wait until the release date typically pocket 25 per cent less than consumers who flog their old iPhones just a week before.

So if you plan to sell your old iPhone, we asked Thom Bryan from comparison site for his tips on getting the best price.

  1. Make sure you shop around. Don’t just go for the first offer you are given. Use a trusted comparison site that shows up-to-date prices with a range of reputable recyclers. You can also choose how you would like to be paid.
  2. Less than perfect handset? Some providers offer a price on damaged phones but check their individual criteria. Light damage” typically means a fully functional phone with cosmetic dents to the case or issues with switching it on and off. Smashed screens and water-damaged phones will be far harder to sell.
  3. Beware of fees. If the phone’s condition doesn’t match what the recycler was expecting, they may contact you to offer a reduced price or return your phone. Some firms will return the phone for free but others may charge you a fee.
  4. Get your mobile recycle-ready. Ensure your phone is in the best possible condition to get the highest price. Get your handset clean and in good working order, fully charged and switched off. Also check the security settings and remove any locks or password protection you have.
  5. Look after your personal information. Make sure you wipe your data after storing it elsewhere and reset your mobile back to its factory settings. See sell mymobile.com/guides/ for tips.
  6. Consider an alternative payout method. Most recycling companies pay by bank transfer, cheque or via Paypal. But others offer high street vouchers that can be of a higher value than cash. So think about whether you will make more this way.
  7. Green benefits. Even if you don’t make a huge amount of money, sending your phone to a recycler is the eco-friendly option. Recyclers can dispose of any noxious components safely and stop the phone going to landfill. And your home has less clutter.
