KNEAD to save yourself some dough?
The Great British Bake Off returns to our screens tonight — and making your own cakes, bread and pies is a great way to save.
Home-baked goods typically cost around a THIRD of what similar items would cost you in the shops, sometimes even less.
That quickly adds up to major savings on your food shop.
Some budding bakers have even set up small home-based businesses selling birthday treats, wedding cakes and other goodies to bring in extra cash.
Sun Savers has teamed up with to bring you seven simple tips to help you rise to the baking challenge.
These won’t break the bank . . . although you might have to break a few eggs on the way.
- DIY. Pre-made cake mixes may seem like the easiest option but they still work out more expensive than cooking from scratch, meaning you will get fewer buns for your buck. Instead, buy your ingredients separately to save.
- Improvise. You don’t need professional kitchen gear to make a scrummy cake. No rolling pin? A bottle will do the job. Need a cookie cutter? Give the kids’ playdough shapers a try.
- Don’t pay out for fancy sprinkles and gems to decorate cakes. Check your cupboards to see what you already have. Fruit, nuts, breakfast cereals and even fresh flowers can all add to that professional look.
- Choose your cakes carefully. If you are just starting out, stick to simple dishes such as a Victoria sponge or a batch of scones which friends and family will all enjoy.
Don’t try a posh (and very complicated) until you are more confident and won’t waste ingredients. - Go global. Explore the world foods aisle in your local supermarket, as you might find the same ingredients and spices you need considerably cheaper than elsewhere in the very same store.
- Be patient. Don’t be tempted to open the oven door to check on the progress of your cake. It uses extra energy, as heat will escape from the oven and the cake will take longer to bake.
- Get cashback on your cakes. is currently offering £15 cashback on a spend of £25 or more at Asda and 4.2 per cent cashback on all orders at Wilko — meaning you can stock up on ingredients and baking basics for a lot less.
