We offer tips on no-interest credit cards to defeat debt — plus, get a free fiver from our rewards club
WHEN it comes to credit cards, zeros are heroes – especially if you have overspent.
Cards offering zero per cent interest are becoming increasingly popular as a way to pay off borrowing and get your finances back under control.
The no-interest product lets overstretched consumers transfer an existing debt balance interest-free for a set amount of time, making it easier to repay more money.
The latest monthly statistics released by UK Finance this week show there were 622,000 transactions — £1.3billion in July alone.
But the Bank of England is worried that the deals could encourage a credit bubble by tempting shoppers to spend too much, knowing they can pay it off without incurring interest.
As a result, lenders have begun to clamp down on deals, cutting both the length of time the zero per cent offer is valid for and who qualifies.
A ClearScore spokesman said: “When you’re dazzled by the prospect of interest-free spending or transferring a debt, it can be all too easy to forget this is a financial product and should come with a word of warning.
“It’s important to use the card in the right way, to make the most of a zero per cent offer. Or you could face financial trouble down the line.”
So if you want to get a zero per cent card to tackle your debts, credit reference experts has these six top tips to bear in mind.
