Here’s how you save money on re-decorating your home

In association with Capital One.

RENTING your home or paying your mortgage costs so much these days that the idea of splashing out on re-decorating seems unachievable.

It doesn't have to be expensive, though. In fact, by making simple swaps and doing things yourself, you can refresh your home and make it look fab on even the tiniest of budgets.

1

Do it yourself

Painters, decorators and handymen are all great at what they do and totally worth it if you've got cash to spare, but if you don't, you can definitely do without. Invest in a weekend or evening DIY course and never hire someone in again.

Find it on Freecycle

If you're after a new furniture head to Freecycle or Gumtree and sift through all of the adverts. Furniture is often free, or super cheap, to those willing to collect it.  You never know, someone might be trying to get rid of the sofa of your dreams.

Head to your local market

For accessories and 'bits and bobs', your local market is your friend. Learn to haggle for antiques or bag a bargain from an artisanal business.

Get Upcycling

Make do with what you have. From painting old wooden chairs, to having a go at distressing a chest of drawers, why not try giving your existing furniture some love?

Buy end of line

Save money on appliances by buying last year's stock. It'll be way cheaper than the newest version and hardly any different.

When it comes to saving money on your home, it's all about research, planning and getting creative.
