Become an appy shopper

WHETHER you’re feeding the kids during the holidays, hosting a barbecue or going on a trip summer can be an expensive time to eat well.

To keep you managing your money, we’ve teamed up with Sainsbury’s to bring you seven simple tips for summer grub.

Clodagh Moriarty, director of online at Sainsbury’s, said: “We see a shift in the nation’s shopping habits as advances in technology combine with summer holidays — more customers than ever will treat their mobile phones as a supermarket in their pocket.”

And your mobile can be put to good use in some of these tips.

  1. Order food to be delivered directly to your UK holiday destination for the day you arrive. It will save you from having to pack perishable items for a long journey in a hot car, as well as freeing up valuable space for bags and bicycles.
  2. Install a supermarket app to check prices on the go. It will let you grab sale items and deals before they sell out.
  3. Don’t be afraid to use multiple platforms. You can start your shop online on your PC or tablet, then complete it later in the day using an app for anything you’ve forgotten or when the latest deals go live.
  4. Set up a Whatsapp group with neighbours so you can share ingredients. If you need a pint of milk and don’t have it, next door may be able to help. And you can offer food that you don’t need to friends.
  5. With our changeable weather, keep an eye on the forecast so you are prepared for sunshine with picnic food and hearty soups for cold, rainy days.
  6. Make use of app functions such as Favourites to save time. These will automatically record the items you order most so you can easily reorder them without searching.
  7. Seen a great deal? Buy in bulk then double up. Prepare enough for two meals so you can serve half immediately and freeze or save the rest for another day.
