Trainshopping: six ways to slash your travel costs
COMMUTERS are feeling taken for a ride after yesterday’s announcement that train fares will rise by up to 3.6 per cent next year.
The eye-watering hike would add hundreds of pounds to the cost of season tickets and also hits travellers making occasional journeys.
Jeremy Acklam, of rail travel app Ticketclever, said: “With the price of train journeys under scrutiny, it’s frustrating that getting the best deal on journeys isn’t straightforward. With so many fare combinations, it’s very difficult for passengers to be certain they have a good deal.”
To make sure your budget doesn’t hit the buffers, we’ve teamed up with Ticketclever.com to reveal the six smartest ways to keep your rail fare costs down.
1 Get a railcard: This offers up to a third off rail fares and includes the Network, 16-25 and Family & Friends railcards. Check details though as most options are restricted to certain time periods.
2 Go off-peak: It is much cheaper than travelling during peak times and rush hour. Check every journey as even a few minutes’ difference can save up to 50 per cent of the cost of the ticket.
3 Split-ticketing: Train travel sites, such as , offer big savings on fares by identifying where your journeys can be broken down into separate parts, with a ticket for each section of the journey. You can get savings of up to 60 per cent and they are highest on journeys of an hour or more.
4 Gold card: If you are a frequent traveller, the Gold Card season ticket could be a solution, providing a yearly discount on rail travel for journeys in certain areas made after 9.30am.
5 Vary routes and timing: Making slight adjustments to the route you take can dramatically change the prices you pay.
6 Look online: Buying online, even on the same day, can be cheaper than a walk-up fare at the station. Always check this before you travel.
