Earlier this week British Gas announced a 12.5 per cent rise in its electricity prices from September 15, meaning millions of customers on its standard tariff face paying £76 more a year.
But the rise should be a reminder for all households to compare tariffs and switch to a cheaper deal.
Money-saving website TopCashback, has eight easy tips to reduce your spend.
- Work out your consumption of both gas and electricity, then you can pay more accurately rather than relying on a provider’s estimation.
- Use an accredited energy price comparison site to see which providers can give you the best deal.
- Gas and electricity from the same supplier is not always your cheapest bet. Do your research and look at the cost of both dual fuel and single fuel.
- Once you have picked a provider and a tariff, go through a cashback website. TopCashback is offering £52.50 cashback when switching to fixed dual fuel with npower.
- Carry out regular meter readings and check bills.
- Changing to online bills may save up to ten per cent as online tariffs can be cheaper.
- From turning off your oven a few minutes early to using a one-hob steamer, small changes can reduce your energy bills to bring costs down.
- Be aware of standard variable rate tariffs the out-of-contract deals your provider will put you on once a fixed deal ends. They cost much more.
