Cheap hols by mistake
SAVVY travellers can cash in when airlines make mistakes with their fare prices.
Tom Church, the founder of , flew return to Mexico for £197 — saving nearly £600 compared to the normal average cost.
The 26-year-old blogger booked after hearing about the discount on a website forum.
It is possible to find an “error flight” yourself.
Tom said: “They occur when airlines or booking websites make a pricing mistake.
“With thousands of flights every day, it’s inevitable blunders happen and sometimes the discounts can be as much as 90 per cent.”
You can find error fares by doing a broad search, using SkyScanner or Google Flights.
Check for fares from an airport to a destination over a month and see if anything low appears.
It is up to the airline or the booking site if they honour the deal.
Around 60 per cent of error fares are accepted, while the rest end up being cancelled and refunded.
Tom added: “It can take days to find a good error fare. If you find one, you may need to act fast.”
You might have to fly from an airport that is out-of-the way or do a stopover in an inconvenient place.
Here are more tips to get a cheap flight:
- Make sure you have signed up to newsletters and emails from your favourite airlines. They will usually email about flash sales — and it will help you secure a low fare.
- Use a flight search engine such as Kiwi, Kayak or SkyScanner. You can also set up price alerts to find out when fares are dropping.
