Safe as houses - tips to beat the burglars

FOOTIE star John Terry’s home got burgled while he was away on holiday – but you can avoid the same fate if you take some simple security steps.

Axe-wielding raiders, who stole £400,000 of luxury goods at England ace Terry’s Surrey mansion — including handbags worth £126,000 — have been jailed for nearly 28 years.

Figures from Lloyds Bank home insurance show a 31 per cent rise in the value of claims when Brits go away in summer — or are out and about in the UK enjoying the sun.

Claims boss Tim Downes says: “As the mercury rises in summer, we see a spike in burglaries.

“Summer is about enjoying the sun and longer days but people should stay alert when it comes to their homes. Taking just a few simple steps will help.”

Here are tips to keep your home safe and save money while on holiday . . .

  • Think before posting holiday pictures on social media, it can tell potential burglars that your home is lying empty.
  • Install a burglar alarm in a prominent place and always set it when leaving your property.
  • Don’t leave a spare key hidden outside because most burglars know where to look.
  • Make sure you have adequate home insurance that also covers belongings in the garden.lMark items with an ultra-violet pen to help trace them if stolen.
  • Keep receipts for valuable items to help in the event of a claim.
  • Put away tools and equipment that could be used to break into homes.
  • Lock away items such as garden ornaments, furniture and bikes when they are not being used.

And here are some steps to take even if you’re staying at home . . .

  • Don’t leave valuables within plain sight or where they might be reached through open windows.
  • Make sure that doors are locked at the end of the day, especially if children have been running in and out of the house.
  • Keep windows closed when not in the room.
  • Keep gardens maintained and trees pruned to remove hiding places for burglars.
