Don't go it a-loan for cash bailout
WORRYING figures this week show that as the cost of living continues to rise, so does the amount of cash taken out in personal loans.
MoneySuperMarket found the average borrowing on a personal loan has risen from £8,650 in 2015 to £8,958.
But one in four tries to take out cash equal to at least half of their annual income, while one in ten want to borrow more than they earn each year.
Kevin Pratt, consumer affairs expert at MoneySuperMarket says: “Many of us need to borrow from time to time but a personal loan is a major financial commitment. Take a few simple steps to ensure you get the right loan.”
Here are MoneySuperMarket’s top loan tips.
- Make sure you can afford the repayments. If you can’t, you may get hit with penalty charges — or worse — if you default.
- Include your repayments in your household budget.
Add your monthly repayment to your budget so you know how much will be left over once the cash leaves your account. - Shop around. Use the tool at bit.ly/2vau3gl to compare loans you could be accepted for without leaving a footprint on your credit file
- Choose your loan term carefully. The longer the term, the lower the repayments, but you’ll pay more in interest.
- Consider whether you need a loan.
If you’re borrowing £1,000 to £5,000, you could be better off with a zero per cent purchase credit card or money transfer card. - Improve your credit rating and you might get a loan with a good interest rate.

SUE COSTELLO from Maldon, Essex, says: “Stretch out your shower gel by putting it into a pump-action dispenser and using a shower puff instead of a sponge or flannel. It lasts much longer.”
