ACCORDING to the Office for National Statistics, Britons made 12.5 million journeys abroad in 2016.
That is 14% up on the previous year, and figures suggest we are spending more now when we are away, too.
In fact, in February 2017 alone we spent a whopping £2.5 billion abroad - that's a lot of money, so how do we spend it smarter?

Check your bank and any supermarkets that you have loyalty cards with – these might have extra perks along with good rates.
Save on ice creams
One of the best things about being on holiday is to be able to indulge yourself all day, every day without feeling the guilt that you would at home.
However, a round of ice creams at the pool or the beach every day can really drive up the costs.

Why not take a trip to the local supermarket instead, where a multi-pack could end up being the same price as one ice cream at the beach.

Remember you may need to tip
Outside of the UK tipping is far more common, and expected across various services.
This can catch you out, so before you go away make sure you allocate enough of your spending money to tipping.
Research your excursions
Although it is tempting to buy all of your excursions when you arrive, you may not always get the best price.
It is worth doing some research online before you go.
Why not try looking at reviews on sites such as Trip Advisor to see what previous travellers have done?
Make a picnic
Buying lunch at the beach every day can end up costing a fortune, especially if you're having dinner out every night, too.
Now, we are not saying that you need to sneak croissants and fruit from the breakfast buffet every morning, but you could see what is on offer at the local supermarket.
Pick up some fresh bread and sandwich fillings and enjoy lunch al fresco.
