It means that shoppers who place deliveries by 1pm can have their orders delivered between 7pm and 11pm that evening.

Around 99 per cent of homes across the UK will be able to get same-day deliveries, Tesco said.

It costs between £3 and £8 per order but customers with a Delivery Saver pass can try out the service for free.

You can get a free Delivery Saver one-month trial, which give you access to free mid-week or weekend deliveries from Tesco from £8 a month, at the moment.

Before the 30 days are up, you'll need to cancel - otherwise you'll start getting charged.

Those who live outside the capital won't be able to order for a same-day delivery on Sundays.

Adrian Letts, managing director of Tesco Online said: “Customers tell us they like getting their shopping delivered quickly and conveniently, and with our same day delivery service they can now order by lunch to get their shopping delivered for their evening meal."

In May, the supermarket annoyed shoppers by upping the cost of its delivery subscription by £1 a month.

Earlier this year, Tesco extended its same day click and collect service - allowing customers to pick-up shopping from more than 300 locations across the country.

Delivery costs £7.99 and there is no minimum spend to place an order.

The retailer has launched the new service to challenge Amazon’s Prime Now service which offers one-hour delivery in selected postcodes, including London, Newcastle and Birmingham, for £6.99.
