A White Van plan
VAN drivers are being driven round the bend by a huge increase in insurance prices.
Analysis by research experts Consumer Intelligence shows White Van Men now face an average insurance bill of £1,636 a year.
That is almost two-and-a-half times higher than car drivers, who pay an average £666.
Prices have soared by up to 29.5 per cent in the past three months due to tax increases and new compensation rules.
But the enormous hikes could leave some traders struggling to pay their insurance bill — or even facing going out of business.
Consumer Intelligence pricing expert John Blevins says: “The acceleration in insurance costs for van drivers is down to insurance payout changes in March, with tax rises and claim costs adding to the pressure.
“Choosing the correct cover is vital, but unfortunately it seems the only way is up.”
MOST READ IN MONEY
Here we offer seven tips to cut the cost of your van insurance.
- Shop around. The prices for cover have been going up but there are still some very competitive deals out there and most insurers will vary their prices month on month.
- Increase your voluntary excess, which is the amount the insurer takes off any claim you make before paying out. The more you are willing to pay towards a claim, the lower your insurance premium will be.
- Drive a smaller van. A lower CC engine or even a smaller van should cost less to insure.
- Join a trade body. If you are a member of organisations such as the Federation of Master Builders, the Federation of Master Craftsmen, NICEIC and Gas Safe, you may qualify for discounts. Ask your insurer or find another one who does offer money off.
- Make your van more secure. Adding a steering lock or fitting an immobiliser, tracker or alarm will mean lower bills — as long as you tell your insurer.
- Put your business name on your van. Some insurers will offer money off if you do this. It makes the vehicle easier to track and harder for thieves to sell and so reduces your bill for cover.
- Give your insurer as much information as possible. Tell them how many miles you do, what you use the van for and whether tools are stored in it overnight.
