Summer break
THE school holidays are here – and your kids could make them pay.
Research from Barclays bank reveals nine in ten eight to 16-year-olds use their free time doing small jobs for cash.
Dubbed the “pocket money economy”, the nice little earners are estimated to be worth £158million nationally over the course of a year — and are a great way to get kids to understand money and start saving.
Ian Rand, CEO of Barclays Business Banking, said: “Lessons such as commitment to work and delivering a service, are skills for any young person to get experience in. We hope these schoolkids become our next entrepreneurs.” Here we show ways your kids can earn and how to set them up.
1. Selling toys and other used items for money. Your kids could have a yard sale or flog toys in top condition on website eBay.
2. Babysitting. Only suitable for kids 16 or over, but it can be a good mini-business.
3. Newspaper round. Children should be 14 to take on this work, but it is regular income all year. Pay can be up to £25 a week.
4. Making something to sell. Does your child love baking? Then hold a cake sale. Are they crafty? Suggest that they design greeting cards to offer to local independent shops. Whatever your child loves to make, encourage them to think how they can sell it.
5. Gardening. Even young children can help with basic tasks like weeding or collecting leaves. Older kids can try heavier tasks.
6. Washing cars. Let your kids practise on your car first and teach them to vacuum and clean the inside too. Once they can do it safely and well, ask friends and neighbours if they need a carwash as it will save on garage prices.
7. Housework. Little ones can do small tasks like fetching loo rolls or dusting. Older children learn valuable life skills by vacuuming, polishing or taking out bins. They could then transfer this experience to paid part-time jobs.
