Get out of tight JAM
WORRYING research shows one in four families have less that £95 in savings – not nearly enough to cover a money emergency or unexpected bill.
While budgeting on a low income is hard, it isn’t impossible. So we’ve teamed up with expert Uaccount.uk for top tips to manage your money.
Alex Letts, CEO and founder of Uaccount.uk, said: “The squeezed middle have been called the Just About Managing (Jams). They are expert at somehow making ends meet.
- Make a budget at the beginning of every month to understand what you have available to spend and what it can be spent on. Use a spreadsheet if you can, but otherwise do it on paper.
- Start your budget with fixed costs such as rent and repayments on loans and credit cards. Then add in the things that can be varied, such as food and drink, TV packages and utilities.
- Next add in items including car and home insurance, petrol and even small costs like bus fares. Then set aside a small fund for leisure activities as we all need a break.
- Don’t panic when it suggests you have more expenditure than income. It helps to understand where you need to reduce costs or change your lifestyle. See what you can change, from swapping utilities or insurance or walking instead of using the bus or car. Maybe buy own brand instead of pricey alternatives. Apply the ten per cent rule to everything.
- Budget to start saving a little, even if it’s just 10p a day. This will get you into a saving mentality.
- Once you’ve started budgeting, check your current account statement weekly online to stay on track. It will allow you to make changes so you don’t run out of money.
App on tablet makes it so easy
RETIRED coach driver David Maddock, 70, from Nottingham, uses the Sun Savers app on his tablet to save his daily codes. He has just reached his first £5. He says: “I thought I would give Sun Savers a go.
Anyone would take a free fiver. I go to the newsagents in the morning to buy the Sun, then as soon as I get home I put the code in on the app. It’s so easy.
“I’ve just got my first fiver, but I’m planning to leave it in the app and let the money add up over time.”
