Knowing the score - tips to improve your credit rating
WE are a nation of borrowers but two-thirds of people have no idea what their credit score is.
Despite a credit rating being the biggest factor in getting financial products such as loans, mortgages, bank accounts and credit cards, many have no idea.
The study from online lender MyJar found four in ten have never tried to find out their rating, and even those who do look at their score leave it more than a year between checks.
A MyJar spokesman said: “It’s really valuable to know and understand your credit score, because if you’re able to improve it, it can offer peace of mind knowing you have that safety net there if you need it.
"You can easily request a copy of your credit score online.”
A better rating means easier access to the best financial deals, so here are MyJar’s top seven tips for improving your score.
- Join the electoral register as it is an easy way for lenders to confirm your identity.
- If you have a credit card, pay it off in full every month.
- Don’t make use of all of your available credit facilities, as it indicates financial difficulty.
- Don’t make a lot of credit applications over a short period of time.
- Having the same bank account for a while is a good indicator for your credit score.
- Make sure your credit applications are consistent — if your job title changes from application to application, it can raise red flags.
- Check your partner or flatmate’s credit is also in order, as sharing an address with someone means their credit score can be tied to yours.
