Slash your fuel bill now
ENERGY watchdog Ofgem yesterday announced plans to “deliver a fairer, more competitive market for all consumers”.
The proposals include a “safeguard tariff” to limit bills for people considered to be at financial risk, to make sure they do not overpay for their energy.
But there is no need to wait to get a fairer deal on your fuel bills.
Here are six simple ways to cut your costs today:
1 Switch suppliers and save. If you are on the most expensive Standard Variable Deal (SVD), you will save an average of £262 a year by changing suppliers.
Even if you are not on an SVD, it is likely you can still hunt down a better offer.
Use price comparisons sites such as or . And don’t forget, tenants can swap suppliers too — you don’t have to own the home.
AVERAGE SAVING: £262
2 Don’t always do the double. Dual fuel deals from the same supplier might be tempting but are not always the cheapest. Compare single tariffs before you buy.
AVERAGE SAVING: Up to £80
3 Swap to online bills. This can cut your costs by up to ten per cent.
AVERAGE SAVING: £130
4 Take regular monthly meter readings. This makes sure you are only being billed for power you have used. It will also make you more aware of your energy use.
AVERAGE SAVING: £30
5 Pay by direct debit. This can slash your bill by between five and ten per cent.
AVERAGE SAVING: £65
6 Avoid pre-payment meters. If you can, switch from pre-payment to standard billing. You will always get a better deal.
AVERAGE SAVING: £250 per year
