He says: “My son Marcus, 11, pointed out that by the end of the year I’ll have an extra £65. That’s brilliant. I’ve read The Sun all my life, now I’m getting money back for my loyalty.

"I recently lost £60 when I walked away from a cash machine without picking up the money.

"I was gutted, but thanks to Sun Savers I’ll be no worse off.

Stop it, you shopaholic

YOU may think you are a savvy shopper . . . but us Brits waste an average of £2,000 every year on impulse buys.

Men are the worst culprits, buying items they don’t need twice as often as women, according to a recent Norton Finance study.

So how can you curb those costly habits and keep cash in the bank?

Paul Stringer, boss of the finance firm, said: “It’s lovely to have small luxuries but it also pays to keep an eye on spending throughout the week.

“More often than not, when people think about what they spend on impulsive purchases, it’s much higher than they thought.”

Here are the top six tips to help.

  1. Don’t shop when emotional. You are more susceptible to impulse spending when upset. If you do feel out of sorts, wait until you have calmed down to see if you still want that big buy.
  2. Always plan your purchases. Making a shopping list can help you stick to what you need and stop you swerving off course when you are scouring the aisles.
  3. Stop and think. Sometimes sales aren’t what they seem. If you see a half-price TV and feel the need to pick it up, stop to think about whether you need it and if this is really the lowest price you can find
  4. Use cash. If you want to make purchases feel more substantial, withdraw money from the ATM and pay with cash rather than using a credit card, where it is easier to rack up your spending without feeling the pull on your pockets.
  5. Curb your shopping time. The less frequently you shop, the less chance you have to spend, plain and simple. If you find that you are going shopping three times per week, can you cut this down to just a single trip instead?
  6. Buy online whenever possible. You can check prices quickly, so you know whether you are getting a good deal. Reading reviews from other customers can help you keep a level head when deciding.
