Insure a cost cut
IF you have a car, check how much you’re paying for your insurance.
A new study from market research firm Consumer Intelligence found motor insurance bills have soared by five times the rate of inflation after a government increase in personal injury payouts and with a rise in tax rates.
The average driver now forks out £666 in premiums, with motorists in London paying a whopping £1,000 and young drivers under 24 facing an eye-watering £1,202 bill.
But switching insurers saves an average of £63 on your premium — and there are other ways to cut costs.
So we’ve teamed up with Consumer Intelligence to bring you these nine essential insurance-busting tips.
- Shop around. Always compare the price you’re being offered and use multiple price comparison websites as they show different deals.
- Haggle with your insurer. It won’t want to lose your custom so many will reduce your premium.
- New rules mean your insurer has to tell you what you paid last year, so you can see if there’s a price rise.
- Switching saves money. The average driver saves £63 a year by moving at the end of the year.
- Consider black box or telematics polices. They reward good driving, keep your costs down and offer the best deals to younger drivers. They can even help older drivers.
- Make sure your insurer knows about any no claims bonuses.
- Take a higher excess. If you are happy to pay more of any claims it cuts your cost. Be realistic though.
- Insurers may offer discounts for alarms and tracking devices, but make sure yours is approved by your insurer.
- Cut your mileage. The less you drive the lower you will pay.
