Let go go gadget... for National Unplugging Day

Pull plug on tech to save yourself cash

TOMORROW  is National Unplugging Day, when families  are asked to go gadget-free and ditch technology for 24 hours.

Of course you’ll have to scan your Sun Savers code first, but  by switching off home tech and taking a break from  chores for just one day a week,  experts estimate families can save an average of £90.72 over a year.

Sarah Scrivener, Smart Energy Expert at British Gas, explains: “In today’s switched-on society, families are spending more time connecting with tech than each other.

“While the physical and emotional benefits of ‘disconnecting’ have been widely reported, unplugging for just one day each week can also help families be smarter with their energy.

“By installing smart meters, families will be able to see exactly how much their household spends a day on energy.”

Here are our top energy tips to cut the cost of your electricity bill.

❶ Ditch the tumble dryer. Drying your clothes on the line can save up to £56 per year.

❷ Microwaves tend to use less energy than a conventional oven, so use yours when you get the chance

❸ When gadgets and appliances aren’t on but are plugged in they still use a small amount of energy, which can add up.

Be sure to unplug your TV, kettle and toaster when not in use and save up to £80 a year.

❹ Almost 90 per cent of a washing machine’s energy expenditure is spent on heating the water, and washing at 30C rather than 40C can save you a third of the cost to run the cycle.

❺ If you’re cooking pasta or rice, or boiling veggies, use the kettle to boil water for cooking, instead of heating a pan on the stove. It’s quicker and uses less energy.

❻ Invest in energy-saving light bulbs and always turn off the lights when you leave a room. You could save up to £100 a year.
