Cool ideas if you're no fan of heat

Don't blow your budget as the temperatures rise

THE heat is on – with temperatures predicted to reach 35C this week.

This also means rocketing electricity bills as Brits bid to stay cool.

Here we show you ten clever heat hacks to battle the heatwave and save money . . .

  • Unplug. All electrical appliances emit heat even on standby. So turn off everything you can from light bulbs to the TV. It will save money and keep you cool.
  • Turn down your water thermostat. Don’t use extra power to heat up water when you want a cool shower or bath.
  • Cook clever. If you can’t stomach more cooling salad and need a cooked meal, cover pots and pans to minimise indoor humidity and cut energy use.
  • Instead of checking food by opening the oven every few minutes and blasting heat into the kitchen, only check your food through the oven glass door.
  • Turn the oven off a few minutes before your food is fully cooked. The food will continue to cook as the oven is so hot.

Pop sheets in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime for a cool night’s sleep

  • DIY your air con. At around £200 each, air conditioning units are expensive and eat up power. Instead, place a couple of frozen water bottles or a large jug of ice in front of a desk fan. It cools the room surprisingly well.
  • Chill your sheets. Pop sheets in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime for a cool night’s sleep. You can even fill a hot water bottle with iced water.
  • Use your windows the right way. Open the top ones to let hot air out and the bottom to bring cooler air in. If you have sash windows, open equal amounts at the top and bottom.
  • Keep curtains closed and blinds down at the hottest part of the day, open early morning and dusk to circulate cool air.
  • Consider double-glazing and insulation. Though we normally associate them with keeping heat in and cold out, both can work to keep heat out and cool air inside too. It’s expensive, but may pay off long-term.
