The £10 Aldi wine that beat a bottle more than DOUBLE the price to win top taste award
The bottle of red was awarded a Gold prize in the Decanter awards - and it costs just £9.99
AN Aldi wine that sells for £9.99 has scooped a top gong beating other bottles more than DOUBLE the price.
Its Lot Series Minervois La Liviniere 2015 was awarded a Gold prize by Decanter – one of the world’s most respected drink competitions.
The bottle of red plonk is made up of an “intense” Syrah and Grenache blend and judges say it tastes of “superb fruit with a lovely purity of eucalyptus.”
It beat a similar wine, the Abadia Retuerta Seleccion Especial, which costs £25 and was awarded a silver medal.
The winning wine is part of its “Lot Series” and first hit shelves back in 2015. The collection has been developed by Aldi’s in-house wine buying team.
It also includes a luxury Maynard’s 10 year old tawny port, which costs £9.99, and also won a top prize in the Decanter awards.
Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying, at Aldi said “Our Lot Series has gone from strength to strength since it launched in 2015, so we are thrilled to see that it is not only popular amongst our customers but that it is also being recognised for its quality by renowned awarding bodies.
Last month, its Exquisite Collection Côtes De Provence 2016 rose won the silver medal at The International Wine Challenge.
Aldi is planning to quadruple the number of stores it has in the UK over the next few years.
It means that some towns and cities could see as many as eight new stores open, if plans go ahead.
