Make the lolly lasto at Glasto

GLASTONBURY starts on Wednesday but despite the hippy vibe, there’s nothing free-love about attending a festival.

Research suggests the average cost of partying at a summer music show has hit a record £400.

Darren Williams from penny-pinching site  said: “Festivals are a great summertime activity but the downside is spending around £200 a ticket and having to pay for so many other costs.

By budgeting, taking food and alcohol and booking travel in advance, you can end up saving.”

Here are some simple tricks that will cut the cost of your festival.

  1. Set a budget and stick to it. Only take cash and don’t withdraw money as festivals can charge. Have an emergency fund and hide it in case your money or bag gets stolen.
  2. Wear a bum bag or cross-shoulder bag. Keep your valuables on you and even sleep with them.
  3. Don’t buy a programme — they tend to be overpriced and you’re likely to lose it. List the artists you want to see before you go or get the festival’s app, which is usually free.
  4. Organise travel in advance and it will be cheaper. Driving? Car share to cut costs further.
  5. Research alcohol rules. Most festivals restrict how much booze you can bring in, so check before you go and take the maximum.
  6. Try volunteering. Festivals are always on the lookout for people to dish out wristbands, pick up litter or direct traffic. In return you can get a free ticket and some even offer free travel, accommodation and food.
  7. Recycle for freebies. At some festivals, taking back your drinks cup can earn around 10p.
  8. Bring your own food. Take along snacks and sandwiches and dedicate a small amount of cash to buying one big meal a day.
  9. Dig out your old phone. Use your ancient brick — it won’t matter if you lose it and the batteries will last.
  10. Don’t waste money on anything expensive. Festivals aren’t about luxury, so don’t spend hundreds of pounds on outfits or camping gear.
