MOST READ IN MONEY
Every penny counts as we save for our wedding next year
BRIDE-to-be Lynda Cummine, 40, from Drymen, Stirling, likes the regular cash boost she gets from the Sun Savers app as she saves up for her wedding day. Engaged to decorator Timmy Kearney, 44, Lynda says:
We got engaged on Hogmanay last year and now every penny counts as we’re waiting to book our wedding day next year.
Timmy buys The Sun every day anyway – he’s a decorator, so it’s practically compulsory!
When we read about Sun Savers we thought that would be a great way to help us on our way.
It was really easy to get to grips with and took no time at all to set up.
I'll use the cash for something special to treat my grandchildren
COLLEGE administrator Nella Feeney, 62, from Duns in the Scottish Borders, says scanning in her Sun Savers code is the first thing she does after buying the newspaper. Nella says:
People are using phones more than ever these days so I think the app is a great idea.
I read about it in the newspaper and a few days later I downloaded it to see what it was all about.
I thought it would be a good way to save money. I find it really easy to use and I’ve had £10 back already.
I’m going to save the money up to treat myself to something special or maybe save it for a bit longer to spend on my grandchildren.
It will be nice to have an extra bit of spending money
PRODUCTION operator William Drysdale, 49, from Livingston in West Lothian, is saving up his Sun Savers cash for a special meal on holiday this summer with his wife Kathleen, 47, who works in social media. He says:
When you buy the paper every day anyway the cashback soon mounts up.
I find the app really easy to use and it’s good to see how far away you are from the next fiver.
We are going to Corfu in the summer, then in September we’re having a holiday in Croatia for our 25th wedding anniversary, so it will be nice to have a bit of extra spending money.
We bust the myths about Sun Savers
Myth 1. There are loads of hoops to jump through.
WRONG. Register your name, date of birth and email, start entering codes and you’re off.
Myth 2. It takes ages to get the fiver.
WRONG. Link your bank account to get it in three to five working days. Or use Paypal and get it instantly.
Myth 3. I have to download an app.
WRONG. We have a sparkly new website too. Just go to .
Make it dough a lot father
IT’S Father’s Day – a time for dads to be spoiled rotten.
But while being a parent might be priceless, it can also be pricey.
The average cost of raising a child has reached £230,000.
Blogger Ricky Willis, from saving website , says: “There are ways for dads to save a few quid and allow fatherhood to be as stress-free on your wallet as possible.”
Here, we have teamed up with Ricky to bring you some top Father’s Day savings tips.
- Pay the kids a quid to wash and polish your motor. You’ll save money on the expensive car wash, plus you can have the TV to yourself for an hour or so.
- Make your own packed lunch and turn it into a family activity. Not only will you cut back by not buying overpriced lunches, but you’ll also teach your kids how to save money and make nutritious food.
- Give yourself some space before making a big purchase. I love my tech and tools but I always leave it 24 hours before parting with my cash to make sure I really need it.
- Give the gift of time. Do free things with your kids, such as having a water fight, playing a board game or heading outdoors with a ball. Having fun will stay in the memory far longer than the batteries will last in a new toy.
- Have a dad’s night in instead of a lads’ night out at the pub. Invite mates round for cards and get them to bring some snacks or drinks.
- Instead of calling someone to do odd jobs, take a look on YouTube for simple DIY tutorials about how to change a dripping tap or how to re-pressurise the boiler. Also, borrow tools from pals to save you forking out for a one-off job.
- Cancel that expensive gym membership and get green-fingered. Pottering about in the garden will burn a lot of calories. You could even get an allotment if you don’t have much space at home. That way, you’ll get fit and produce free food to save on your supermarket spend.
