RIGHT ON QUEUE

Barclaycard’s new mobile app means you’ll never have to queue at the supermarket again

Shoppers will be able to scan barcodes and pay without visiting a checkout - but keen customers will have to wait as the technology is still being tested

BARCLAYCARD is planning to launch a new mobile app that means shoppers may never have to queue again.

The new technology allows shoppers to scan the bar code of the item they want to buy with their phone's camera and automatically pay using their credit card.

The futuristic payment method is being trialled by Barclays and Barclaycard staff at their Canary Wharf office in London.

It is also working with a high street retailer to try out the Grab+Go app in shops next year.

Usman Sheikh, director or design and experimentation at Barclaycard, said: “One of the key customer frustrations with shopping is the time spent queuing to pay for items they want to buy – especially when they are in a hurry.

“Using the latest technology, we’ve developed Grab+Go to streamline the shopping experience by removing the need to physically check out every time you want to buy something.”

“An important part of this trial will be getting feedback from colleagues, as well as the operators in the staff restaurants, to further develop the product and proposal.

“Once the final version is complete, it will be available to our clients to help revolutionise payments in their own businesses.”

Barclaycard is planning to test the technology in its UK and US offices in Northampton, Teeside, New York and Wilmington before starting trials with retailers early next year.

Amazon is trialling its own check-out free shops in the US where customers just swipe their smartphone on leaving the store.

Last week, the online retail giant registered the trademark “No Queue. No Checkout. (No, Seriously.)” in the UK, fuelling rumours that it is planning to open similar stores in London.
