Budget chain Aldi crowned best ‘own brand’ food with rival Lidl in second place
Aldi came top for helping shoppers save money by providing affordable alternatives to popular brands
BUDGET chain Aldi has been crowned Britain’s best for own-brand food in industry awards.
The German-owned company triumphed in 24 of 68 categories ranging from bread to bacon.
Lidl was second, winning 16 categories, and Asda third with 13 wins.
The best own-label item was Marks & Spencer’s Melting Chocolate Dome dessert.
Tesco’s Finest King Prawn & Pickled Butternut salad was most innovative product, industry bible The Grocer said.
A panel blind-tasted all products in the contest, rating for taste, texture, price and innovation.
Aldi helps shoppers save money by providing their own versions of top brands, which helped them win the top spot.
The Grocer said: “Aldi continued to impress through its blend of quality and value.
