MORRISONS is to start selling cut-price wonky avocados as demand and global prices for the fruit hit record levels.
The supermarket will sell the misshapen and superficially blemished fruit for 39p each as the average retail price hits £1.05, up from 98p last year.
The global price of avocados has soared due to bad weather, late harvests and worker strikes.
Previously Europe-bound fruit from Peru is being sent to the US, which is facing a decline in Californian output because of drought.
That has coincided with soaring demand from consumers drawn by health benefits including high levels of vitamin E, iron and potassium.
Morrisons said its South African avocados were termed wonky because of their assorted sizes and blemishes.
But James Turner, avocado buyer at the store, said: “Apart from being odd shapes and with some marks on the outer hard skin, they’re the same as normal avocados.”
They go on sale on Monday.
This week, plastic surgeon Simon Eccles suggested avocados should carry warnings after a rise in knife injuries from cutting into the fruit.
