AN iconic McDonald's menu item that is only usually seen in the US will be released for the first time in the UK in just a few hours.

But the mint green Irish-themed drink will only be available for a limited amount of time.

The chain proudly announced: "McDonald’s UK can officially confirm the rumours are true as Shamrock Shake makes its first ever UK debut.

"For all mint-obsessed fans out there, this is your time to shine!"

McDonald's says: "The delicious Shamrock Shake features a peppermint-flavoured syrup blended with a creamy milkshake base.

" This is a flavour customers can all be in a-green-mint of!"

The cool and refreshing shake is made with vanilla soft serve ice cream, mixed with the minty syrup, and topped with whipped cream.

Fans can get their hands on the US shake between March 12 and March 25.

While the price is yet to be confirmed, the chain has said that 20p from each purchase will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities UK.

The iconic shake was first created in 1967 by Hal Rosen, a McDonald's owner and operator from Connecticut.

He wanted to invent a product that would help celebrate St Patrick's Day.

The Shamrock Shake took the chain by storm and was eventually rolled out across a number of US locations in 1970 becoming an "instant success", according to McDonald's.

It led to the limited edition Shamrock Sundae in 1980 made up of soft serve vanilla ice cream topped with the minty syrup.

In 2020, the chain celebrated the Shamrock Shake's 50th anniversary by launching the OREO Shamrock McFlurry which became hugely popular.

UK McDonald's fans can't wait to get their first sips of the shake with many taking to social media and tagging friends and family to book in a trip to their local branch.

How to save at McDonald's

You could end up being charged more for a McDonald's meal based solely on the McDonald's restaurant you choose.

Research by The Sun found a Big Mac meal can be up to 30% cheaper at restaurants just two miles apart from each other.

You can pick up a Big Mac and fries for just £2.99 at any time by filling in a feedback survey found on McDonald's receipts.

The receipt should come with a 12-digit code which you can enter into the Food for Thought website alongside your submitted survey.

You'll then receive a five-digit code which is your voucher for the £2.99 offer.

There are some deals and offers you can only get if you have the My McDonald’s app, so it’s worth signing up to get money off your meals.

The MyMcDonald’s app can be downloaded on iPhone and Android phones and is quick to set up.

You can also bag freebies and discounts on your birthday if you’re a My McDonald’s app user.

The chain has recently sent out reminders to app users to fill out their birthday details - otherwise they could miss out on birthday treats.

One wrote on Facebook: "You coming to get one with me tomorrow?" with their friend quickly replying, "Omg! So down for that!"

"Cant wait to try this especially as one of my favourite chocolates is Aero," another said.

"I’m from America and the shamrock shake is the best I missed it!" a third said as they excitedly prepare for the UK version to drop tomorrow.

"Oh I hoped we get the shamrock shake I had it in Florida a couple of years ago and it was so good!" another added.

But not everyone is convinced.

One McDonald's lover simply wrote "McToothpaste" in response to the announcement.

"Looks like a highlighter stick that's been thrown into the water," another added, noting the bright green hue of the drink.

But there are other new editions to the menu that could get those who hate mint excited.
