Five ways to save money on your television streaming services – including Netflix

Here’s how to cut the cost of watching the box . . .

The first top 10 shows for 2025 chosen by our TV experts

IT is a lovely feeling, relaxing on the sofa after a long day to catch a great show on the telly.

But the cost of small-screen viewing can add up if you pay for lots of streaming services.

Five ways to cash money on your television streaming services – including Netflix

So here’s how to cut the cost of watching the box . . .

TV LICENCE: If you’re over 75 and receiving Pension Credit you’re entitled to a free television licence, but you need to apply. You can do this by calling 0300 790 6117.

ACCEPT ADS: If you are signed up for Netflix or Disney+, you will pay far less if you go for plans with adverts.

For example, a Disney standard plan is £4.99 a month with ads but costs £8.99 without.

And a Netflix standard plan is £12.99 a month without adverts or £5.99 with them. If you downgraded both plans, you would save £11 a month or £132 over a year.

CANCEL CULTURE: Keep on top of which subscription television you use a lot and cancel those you don’t.

If you sign up to Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix or Amazon Prime for a specific series or film, you can cancel at any time as there is no minimum contract.

Remember you can stream box sets, films and more for free on iPlayer, ITVX, Channel4 and My5.

CHECK FOR PERKS: Make the most of any benefits that come with your bank account or other financial products. For example, the Lloyds’ Club Lloyds account gives customers a free 12-month Disney+ standard plan with ads, while O2 customers can get £2 a month off Disney+.

HAGGLE: If you’ve been a long-standing customer of EE, Sky and Virgin TV packages you can try to score some savings by calling and haggling over costs, particularly if you are paying for larger packages.

Tell an agent that you are thinking about leaving and moving to a rival company and the chances are that they will offer you a better deal to stay.
