Five simple laundry hacks that will save cash and improve your wardrobe’s lifespan

REPLACING tired and worn-out clothes is a cost that most of us can do without.

But some simple changes to your laundry cycle can improve the lifespan of your wardrobe.

Keep items looking better for longer with these tips . . . 

COOL DOWN: Wash the majority of your laundry at 30C to help it keep its shape and colour for longer.

A 30C cycle will get your clothes just as clean as one ten degrees higher, plus washing at a lower temperature will help bring down your energy bills.

The exception is bedding, towels and underwear, which should be washed at higher temperatures to help kill bacteria.

INSIDE OUT: Before chucking your clothes in the washing machine, turn them inside out.

This is especially important with clothing that has print or coloured clothing such as denim.

Washing inside out helps protect the outside of the item from rubbing, which over time leads to fading.

SPOT WASH: Most of us put our clothes through washing machine cycles too often, according to brand River Island.

If an item has a couple of marks rather than ingrained odours and dirt, try spot washing instead.

Simply wipe off muck, and use a white cloth with a small amount of detergent to work at the stain from the outside in.

It’s better to tackle marks as soon as you can, you can carry a stain remover pen with you to help. The Range sells these for £1.

AXE THE DRIER: Tumble drying your clothes can wear fabrics out prematurely.

It’s far better for the lifespan of your clothing to dry laundry on the line instead.

It’s harder in winter, but on cool bright days, you can get clothes dry outside if there is a breeze and temperatures are above five degrees.

HANG UPS: Clothes will keep their shape for longer if you store on a good hanger meaning your wardrobe will look better for longer.
