The Traitors stars serve up free coffee as Nespresso launches new products

BRITONS down more than 12million litres of coffee as they prepare for the day and commute to work.

A study of 2,000 adults found that more than 53million mugs, which typically hold 237ml of liquid, are consumed across the nation in the early hours of the day.

As a result, 54% of coffee drinkers say they can’t function properly without their morning brew, while 47% wouldn’t dream of leaving the house for work without one in hand.

Londoners place the most importance on coffee as part of their morning routines – with the first cup being poured at an average time of 7.14am.

And 52% of those in the capital claim it gives them the energy to take on the day ahead.

Gen Z is the most reliant on this morning pick-me-up – with over twice the amount of these pairing their mug with oat over dairy, compared to Boomers (21% vs 10%).

The research was commissioned by Nespresso to mark the launch of its new pods in collaboration with Oatly, which are being given away to thirsty commuters in London Victoria today, Waterloo on Friday, February 14, and Manchester Piccadilly on Monday, February 17 between 7am and 12pm.

They were joined by stars of The Traitors, Linda Rands and Minah Shannon, who served up hot coffees to those faithful to the oat drink.

The study also found that 27 is the age when coffee becomes a crucial part of the morning routine.

With 43% feeling energised after their first cup, while 37% say it helps them focus.

However, during the winter months, coffee drinkers become even more reliant on their caffeine fix, with 64% craving the warmth and comfort it brings.

The research, conducted via OnePoll, also revealed that 41% like to experiment with their morning brew, trying different flavour combinations and milk alternatives.

Three in 10 (29%) frequently swap traditional milk for something different, with 27% doing so for variety and 19% believing it to be a healthier option.

Anna Lundstrom, CEO of Nespresso UK&I, added: “The UK coffee scene is constantly evolving, with new trends and recipes shaping the way we enjoy our daily cups.

“More than half of UK coffee shop visitors now choose oat-based coffees, with favourites like Oat Lattes, Cappuccinos, and Flat Whites growing in popularity year after year.”

STUDIES regularly find that drinking coffee can be good for your health – here are some of its reported benefits:

A longer life: It helps us stay awake and could also keep us alive, according to science. Southern Medical University in China found coffee drinkers were a third less likely to die young.

A healthier heart: Semmelweis University in Hungary found average coffee drinkers had a 21 per cent lower chance of having a stroke and a 17 per cent lower risk of dying of heart disease.

A mighty memory: Research by the University of Verona found regularly drinking espresso coffee can reduce your risk of dementia-causing Alzheimer's disease.

A curb on cancer: Studies suggest drinking moderate amounts of coffee can reduce the risk of cancers of the bowel and womb.
