Digital driving licences to be introduced this year on a new smartphone app that will store government-issued virtual documents

MILLIONS of us rely on our cars each day but being a motorist can be painfully expensive.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to soften the blow.

So check out these easy ways to drive down the costs . . .

FUEL SAVER: Shop around to find the cheapest forecourt in your area on petrolprices.com or use their the app.

Comparing prices each time you fill up can save you around £240 a year.

Clearing out your boot to make sure you are not carrying extra weight will make you burn through fuel slower.

Underinflated tyres can also make the engine work harder and cost you in added petrol or diesel.

Check tyre pressure once a month to make sure they are hitting the pressure target. You can find this information in your vehicle’s handbook, door frame or fuel filler flap.

FREE CHECKS: Head to Halfords for a five-point check where a technician will assess the health of your windscreen, headlights, brake lights, wiper blades and battery for free.

Or, if you sign up to its free Motoring Club you will get a complimentary ten-point car check worth £15.

This is ideally done before an MOT or long car journey and includes a look at tyres and oil levels. You will also get a £5 welcome voucher from signing up.

When it’s time for a service, look around for a good-value garage. Branded dealerships are often much more expensive than independent garages.

Warning over petrol station mistake which can cost £1,000s

COMPARE COVER: Car insurance is an unavoidable sting in the pocket but you can make big savings by simply shopping around each year rather than auto-renewing with the same provider.

Use a comparison site such as MoneySupermarket or GoCompare.

When it comes to buying cover, you will pay less overall if you can pay upfront in one go rather than spreading the costs over a year.
