AN ultra-rare 50p has been listed on eBay for nearly 80,000 times its original value due to its "rare" status.

The coin is up for grabs at a staggering £39,999 with another seller from Bolton asking for an eye-watering £14,000.

The ‘Diversity Built Britain’ 50p, minted in 2020, features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and the words "DIVERSITY BUILT BRITAIN" on the other.

Designed by Dominique Evans, who also created the Jane Austen 2017 UK coin, the piece was influenced by her experiences growing up as a mixed-race woman in the UK.

The background of the coin features a geodome made up of connected lines and triangles.

Ms Evans explained: "Each part is equal, representing a strong and united community."

The words ‘DIVERSITY BUILT BRITAIN’ highlight both differences and the unity that brings people together.

She added: "The design looks to the future, showing how we can grow stronger by connecting and building bonds."

The coins were first put into circulation in October 2020, commissioned by then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak after discussions with the We Too Built Britain campaign, which promotes fair representation of minority contributions.

According to the seller, it is in "very good condition" and "a real must for any coin collection."

Delivery is free and expected within three days – but there’s a catch: no returns accepted.

The Royal Mint released this special edition 50p to celebrate diversity and recognise the contribution of ethnic minorities in building modern Britain.

It comes as another ultra-rare Olympic 50p sold on eBay for £4,000 due to an "extra special" design detail.

The 2011 coin, released ahead of the London Olympics, features a swimmer with their face obscured by water ripples – a mistake that was quickly corrected, making these versions extremely rare.

Only a few hundred of these error coins are believed to be in circulation, with previous examples selling for as much as £1,500.

Meanwhile, the Kew Gardens 50p remains the holy grail of UK coins, with just 200,000 ever made. One of these recently fetched £895 on eBay.

How to spot and sell rare coins

A coin is considered rare if it has a low mintage or a manufacturing error.

Collectors can check their change for valuable coins using The Royal Mint’s website or the Change Checker scarcity index.

If you think you’ve got a rare coin, you can sell it on eBay, at auction, or through The Royal Mint’s Collectors Service, which authenticates and values coins – though there is a fee.

For those selling on Facebook, be wary of scammers.
