FEBRUARY is Children’s Dental Health Month.
Little ones sometimes need help looking after their teeth.
So help them brush up well with these bite-sized tips.
BOP ’N’ BRUSH: Everyone is supposed to clean their teeth for two minutes twice a day but those 120 seconds can feel like a long time.
Make it fun without having to spend big money on a “smart” brush. Try listening to a song that is two minutes long to keep you and your kids brushing to the end.
Have a search on Spotify for “two-minute songs for brushing teeth” and the “Brush your teeth kids” playlist.

PLAY THE GAME: Make going to the dentist a less scary experience by reading picture books to your children to show them what to expect. Then try a roleplay game, taking turns to be the dentist and the patient.
Get kids to try to count your teeth and you can do the same. You can also encourage them to play dentist with their dolls or soft toys.
Take their favourite books to read in the waiting room and reward them afterwards with an outing or a film night rather than a sweet treat.
Watching a short film can also take the fear out of going to the dentist. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about getting their teeth checked. Also search “kidsvids” at the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (bspd.co.uk).

FIND YOUR LEVEL: There seem to be endless options when it comes to choosing toothpaste, even for kids. Unless they have specific dental issues, a standard fluoride paste will do the job just fine.
Children aged six and under should use toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm of fluoride. For those seven and older, aim for a level of 1,350ppm to 1,500ppm.
You can get own-brand kids’ toothpastes for half the price of ones by big brand names.
Check the label for the level of fluoride in the pack then check the price per 100ml to snag a bargain.
