A frustrated customer took to Twitter to question the food giant about its tomato and lentil ragu sauce, writing: "@HeinzUK has your tomato and lentil ragu sauce been discontinued please?"

Heinz responded and confirmed the item was no more.

They said: “I’m afraid it has, Jenny.”

The revelation has sparked frustration among fans, with some pointing out that the sauce is still listed as "out of stock" on supermarket websites, leading to confusion about its availability.

For those still hunting for the product, it may be worth checking smaller shops or independent online retailers as they could have remaining stock on their shelves.

Once sold, however, it will no longer be restocked.

Although Heinz has pulled the plug on its Tomato and Lentil Ragu, the brand still offers a range of other pasta sauces.

Popular options such as Tomato and Chilli Pasta sauce and Tomato Bolognese sauce remain available, both retailing for £2.

Asda is also selling Heinz’s Ricotta and Lemon Pasta sauce for half price, reduced from £3 to £1.50, as well as the Heinz Spicy Nduja Pasta sauce for £1.50 instead of £2.

Fans of lentil-based sauces may want to try alternatives like Mr Organic’s Lentil Ragu Sauce, which Ocado currently stocks at £2.25, down from £3.

The retailer has also slashed the price of Heinz’s cherry tomato pasta sauce from £2.35 to £1.50, offering shoppers a chance to stock up on other favourites.

Other discontinued Heinz products

The tomato and lentil ragu isn’t the first product to be axed by Heinz this year.

Last month, the brand confirmed it had discontinued its curry-flavoured baked beans, leaving fans devastated.

Over the summer, Heinz’s easy-to-use spray salad dressings were also taken off shelves.

The range, which included flavours like chilli and lime and raspberry balsamic, had been hailed as a “game changer” by fans when it launched in 2020.

Heinz also confirmed this year that it discontinued the Piccalilli Pickle condiment and tins of its organic baked beans.

With changes to its product range seemingly becoming more frequent, shoppers may want to stock up on their favourite Heinz items while they still can.

Why are products axed or recipes changed?

ANALYSIS by chief consumer reporter James Flanders.

Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether.

They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers.

There are several reasons why this could be done.

For example, government regulation, like the "sugar tax," forces firms to change their recipes.

Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs.

They may opt for a cheaper alternative, especially when costs are rising to keep prices stable.

For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018.

It has recently returned after six years away but as a sugar-free version.

Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year.

Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks.

While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose.
