Poundland slashes 100s of prices and makes a huge change on shelves

POUNDLAND has started selling a third of its products for £1 or less to entice shoppers back into its stores. 

Customers can now pick up hundreds of items like Fairy Liquid, Colgate toothpaste and Christmas wrapping paper for £1 or less, as well as everyday essentials such as milk, eggs and bread.

Two-litre cartons of milk have been reduced from £1.45, while 800g loaves of Kingsmill or Brace's bread have dropped from £1.25.

Across Poundland's typical core range of about 5,000 products, about a third will be £1 or less - roughly 1,666 items.

New signage has already started appearing in Poundland stores declaring it the “Home of the £1”. 

Among the items priced at £1 at around 520 stores are fresh produce like apples and oranges.

Six free range eggs have been reduced from £1.50 and £1kg of Whitworth sugar from £1.10.

The Poundland website also has a home of the £1 section with nearly 800 items.

Shoppers will see signs on shop shelves next to items that have been reduced.

The discount store made the major announcement after its profits tumbled by £642million and it saw a “significant decline in performance” over the last two years.

Its owner, Pepco Group, said it is now considering “every strategic option” to save the struggling chain and is returning to what it does best.

Stephan Borchert, chief executive of the Pepco Group, said: "At Poundland, recent performance has been very challenging, impacted by declines in clothing and general merchandise following the transition to Pepco-sourced product ranges at the start of the year.

"We are taking swift action to get Poundland performance back on track, focusing on a return to Poundland's strengths."

Pound shops have slowly disappeared from high streets in recent years, while others have had to increase prices as high inflation has made it more difficult to offer products for £1. 

Poundland began hiking prices over the £1 mark in 2017, and the following year rival Poundworld collapsed - blaming high costs and low footfall. 

By 2019 product prices at Poundland ranged in price from 50p up to £5.

Shoppers have become more squeezed during the cost of living crisis, but now Poundland is cutting prices back to the £1 price point. 

Supermarkets have also been slashing prices in recent months. 

Tesco said it had cut prices on thousands of products in October and was “lowering prices as quickly as possible” as inflation eases. 

In August, Ocado launched its latest Big Price Drop scheme - cutting the prices of more than 450 products by an average of 17%. 

Aldi spent £100million on cutting prices on 300 products to stay the cheapest supermarket.

When hunting for a deal it is important to shop around to make sure you are not being overcharged.

There are plenty of comparison websites out there that'll check prices for you - so don't be left paying more than you have to.

Most of them work by comparing the prices across hundreds of retailers.

For example, Google Shopping is a tool that lets users search for and compare prices for products across the web. Simply type in keywords, or a product number, to bring up search results.
