The world’s cheapest (and most expensive) cities to visit this year revealed
Avoid Tokyo, Paris and New York this summer if you want to keep costs low
BUDGET travellers should avoid Geneva, Paris and New York this summer, as new research shows that the three cities are among the most expensive in the world.
Instead, Brits should consider holidaying in Bucharest, Mumbai and Almaty in Kazakhstan, as these are among the cheapest cities to visit this year.
According to a worldwide cost of living survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit, which compares the cost of a basket of 150 goods across 133 cities around the world, Singapore is the the most expensive major city on Earth.
The data doesn't take into account how much it costs to get to each destination, but it is a helpful guide for budget travellers to see where is cheap - and where isn't.
Singapore, which has topped the charts as the most expensive city in the world for four consecutive years, is followed by Hong Kong, Zurich, Tokyo and Osaka, both in Japan.
Seoul, Geneva, Paris and Copenhagen also featured in the top 10 most expensive list.
Thanks to the falling pound post-Brexit, London fell 18 places to 24th compared with 6th place last year. The city that fell furthest in the rankings overall, from 26th to 51st place, was Manchester.
On the other end of the scale, three cities in eastern Europe are among the top 10 cheapest in the world.
Almaty in Kazakhstan, the Ukrainian capital Kiev, and the Romanian capital Bucharest feature first, eighth and ninth in the list of the top 10 cheapest cities in the world.
India also looks cheap for travellers on a tight budget, with Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi all among the bottom 10.
Jon Copestake, editor of the survey, said: "With UK cities slipping down the ranking and Asian cities rising, we now see only four European cities among the ten most expensive.
"This is a significant change from ten years ago when European cities made up eight of the top ten most expensive."
A separate study out earlier this year revealed the cheapest summer holiday destinations for 2017, and Ibiza, Pula in Croatia and Faro in Portugal featured highly on the list.
Flight comparison site Kayak.co.uk looked at the price difference for flights to many key destinations, including Spanish and Portuguese resorts, and found that they have dropped in price massively for holidays this summer (June, July and August).
