ENERGY bills shoot up in the winter as we use more power in everyday life.
But one area you can cut costs is with your laundry.
Make a few easy changes and you could see a tidy saving.
LOSE THE HEAT: Washing your clothes at 20 degrees instead of 40 saves half the amount of energy. This can cut £36 off bills a year, according to consumer group Which?
If your clothes aren’t stained, 20 degrees is sufficient. But you should wash bedding, towels and soiled clothing at 60 degrees to kill bacteria.
If you pay less for energy at night, use the timer setting to get your wash done overnight.

A DASH OF VINEGAR: It’s annoying to run clothes through the machine and find they are still stained so treat marks beforehand to avoid double washing.
Forget expensive removal treatments and try a cupboard staple. White vinegar is safe to use on laundry when diluted and can help tackle marks as a pre-treatment before washing.
You can also use it to clean your washing machine by running it through on an empty hot wash.
WASH LESS: One way to use less energy is by reducing the amount you use your machine.

Hang your clothes up at the end of the day to help air them out and you can then decide if you are able to get another wear out of them. And only run your machine when you have a full load.
TENNIS TIP: If you are using a tumble dryer, speed things up by popping a spare tennis ball in with your clothes.
The ball’s bouncing creates air pockets and separates clothes to aid drying, plus the ball will also help soften the clothes and reduce static.
You can also buy special tumble dryer balls — get a pack of two from Screwfix for £4.19.
Also, the machine will use more energy if the filters are clogged, so clear them after each load.
