Many properties that are usually closed to the public are opening their doors, and others are waiving their entry fee.

Plus, there are thousands of events around the country bringing history to life.

CASTLES TO CLOCKTOWERS: In England, Heritage Open Days runs until a week tomorrow, with more than 5,000 events nationwide.

Film buffs can see inside Stourhead House in Wiltshire, where the film version of Pride And Prejudice was made, and which is normally closed to the public.

Or families can watch a free re-enactment of English Civil War battles at Chester Castle.

NATIONAL TREASURES: As part of the week-long festival, many National Trust and English Heritage sites will be offering free entry, as well as tours and talks, on selected dates this week.

Check the Heritage Open Days site to find out dates and times and whether pre-booking is necessary.

CAPITAL EXPERIENCE: London’s Open House Festival, which runs from September 14 to 22, allows public entry to some of the capital’s most extraordinary private homes, government buildings and historic sites that are normally closed.

Best of all, it’s free, but some venues require pre-booking, so check at programme.openhouse.org.uk.

WALKS, TALKS AND TOURS: The other UK nations are holding their own history celebrations this month.

Celebrating British Pride: Icons, Legends, and Delicacies

Northern Ireland is taking part in European Heritage Days on September 14 and 15, with free entry to around 260 buildings, monuments and landmarks.

In Wales, events are being held throughout September through the Open Doors festival.

In Scotland, doorsopendays.org.uk is a free festival this month celebrating locations throughout the country.
