WHEN the Lidl mystery box arrived in The Sun HQ I could barely contain my excitement.

The box was huge and heavy - but did it really contain £199 worth of items despite the £20 price tag? I was keen to find out.

Only 1,000 of the boxes went on sale this morning but quickly sold out, with some customers unhappy that they missed out.

One user of X wrote: "Super disappointed was one of the first to try and get the Lidl mystery box but the website was bugging and wouldn’t accept any payment method I tried and then it sold out been trying since 10:00 disappointing."

WHAT WAS INSIDE THE BOX?

Feeling extremely lucky that has Lidl sent one to The Sun's offices this morning, I was ready to open the box.

The first thing that caught my eye was a massive musical keyboard.

These can cost between £50 and £100 in shops, so it was a good start.

It does not appear to have a brand so its hard to find the exact model online to compare prices, however it features everything you would expect the musical instrument to have.

I thought this product was quite unusual and really was not expecting it to be included in the box, but I was pleased nonetheless.

Up next was a self heating mattress topper from the brand Silent Night.

These cost £35 to buy from places such as Argos. As we're in the middle of summer, I won't be using this yet - but it will be handy once temperatures drop.

It did make me wonder why it was included in the box. I wondered whether it was unsold stock from the summer?

A pizza baking set was also amongst the products included in the box.

Total: £182.96

It is from the brand Zenker. Which I had never heard of before, but saw online this product costs over £25.

Keeping with the cooking theme, my box also included a two pack of chopping boards.

They are from the brand Ernesto, which I have spotted in Lidl's middle aisle before.

These usually cost around £4 to buy, so not a massive saving but considering the prices of the other products included I did not feel short changed.

Another quirky find was the LED outdoor light by Livarno.

Again, this exact product was hard to find online but products by the brand can cost around £19.99 so it seems like a good bargain.

It comes with six hours of light and a motion sensor feature would make it perfect for summer parties.

This is not a product I would have every thought to buy, so I am very excited to try it out.

The box featured a lot of cooking and homeware products, which Lidl is known for selling.

This Ernesto casserole dish was no exception. The product was stainless steal and did not feel cheap or bad value.

While I am not a keen cook, I knew this dish would make any other amateur chef very happy.

There were a few more smaller items such as a Torque wrench, Lidl novelty socks, nail scissors and a USB charging cable.

Is it worth it?

I really liked the excitement of finding out what was in the box and the £20 price tag is very reasonable for the amount of items you get.

I estimated that in total my box added up to £183.

There were plenty of products that would come in useful in the kitchen - perfect for busy families.

However, as the items in each box vary, maybe I just lucked out?

I was a bit worried about it being a waste of money and ending up with items I wouldn't use but I was pleasantly surprised.

Although, the items might not be to everyone's tastes - but you could sell anything that you won't use and make a profit.

But with only 1,000 boxes there was always going to be disappointed shoppers and it made me wonder if the aim was to shift stock they can't sell.
